How Commercial Interior Design Projects Work (Bars, Restaurants & Holiday Lets)
Designing commercial spaces like bars, restaurants, and holiday lets requires a slightly different approach than residential projects, as the goals are often focused on both creating a functional environment for staff and guests, as well as ensuring a memorable, branded experience that draws in customers. Here’s how I work through the design process for commercial projects:
1. Initial Consultation & Brief
The first step is always an in-depth consultation. I meet with my clients to understand their business goals, brand identity, target audience, and the overall atmosphere they want to create. Whether it’s a relaxed, family-friendly vibe for a restaurant or a chic, contemporary atmosphere for a bar, it’s essential that the space reflects the values and personality of the business. We discuss practical aspects such as layout requirements, budget, timeline, and any specific functionality the space needs—such as kitchen areas for restaurants or reception spaces for holiday lets.
2. Concept Development & Creative Exploration
Once I have a clear understanding of the brief, I begin developing design concepts that balance functionality with the brand’s aesthetic. The focus here is on designing a space that not only looks great but is also practical for daily operations.
Sketches: I start by sketching initial design ideas, including layout options, space planning, and how the flow of the space will work. This is especially important in commercial spaces, where ease of movement and accessibility are crucial.
Moodboards & Pinboards: Moodboards and pinboards come next, where I gather inspiration based on the design concept, client preferences, and branding guidelines. These boards include colour schemes, materials, furniture ideas, and imagery that convey the desired atmosphere. It allows the client to visualise how the design elements will come together and make adjustments as needed.
3D Models: Once the overall concept starts to take shape, I create detailed 3D models of the space. These models help bring the design to life and give the client a realistic visualisation of the finished space, allowing us to refine the layout and design choices before making any final decisions on materials and furnishings.
3. Design Refinement & Client Feedback
After presenting the initial design concept, I gather feedback from the client. In this phase, we work together to fine-tune elements like furniture selection, layout adjustments, lighting, and colour schemes. Since commercial spaces often require a balance between aesthetics and functionality, I pay particular attention to how the design will enhance the customer experience while being efficient for staff. The aim is to ensure the space not only looks appealing but also works seamlessly for daily operations.
4. Final Design & Implementation
Once the design is refined, I prepare detailed plans and specifications for every element of the space, including furniture layouts, materials, lighting, and decor. I can also assist with sourcing and procuring furnishings and materials to match the design vision.
For commercial projects, the implementation stage is especially important, as it involves coordinating suppliers, contractors, and installers to ensure the design is realised to the highest standard. I oversee the entire process, ensuring that everything is executed according to plan, within budget, and to schedule.
Styling: At the end of the project, I offer styling services to ensure the space is finished to perfection, including furniture arrangement, décor styling, and final touches that elevate the atmosphere.
Photography: Finally, I ask clients if they’d be happy for me to photograph the completed space for my portfolio. High-quality images help showcase the design and are a valuable resource for future marketing.
5. Completion & Client Satisfaction
The ultimate goal is to create a space that works for the business, attracts customers, and reflects the brand identity. Once the project is complete, I conduct a final walk-through with the client to ensure that every detail has been executed to their satisfaction and that the space is fully operational. I also ensure that any necessary adjustments are made, so the client is completely happy with the final result.
Throughout the process, I use sketches, moodboards, 3D models, and client feedback to ensure the design meets the functional needs of the business while creating a visually impactful environment that aligns with the brand.
